There are over 40,000 young people in WA who have a sibling, parent or family member with disability, physical or mental health challenge.  A ‘young carer’ is a person under the age of 25, who helps support a member of their household who is experiencing a disability, long term health condition, terminal illness, substance dependency, mental health or is frail aged.

For many young carers, helping to look after somebody else who has a disability, physical or mental health challenge is just a normal part of life. Even though it can be a rewarding experience, it can also be very challenging. Often the extra practical and emotional responsibilities that a ‘young carer’ takes on goes unnoticed.

Carers WA have a dedicated team of social workers who offer free outreach and ongoing support to ‘young carers’ across WA. They also actively engage with families, education and service providers to increase awareness and support for young carers in the community.

This month I had the pleasure of training the Young Carers Team, as Coaching Young People For Success Leaders. It was so rewarding to see them grow in their coaching skills over the two days and provide them with tools to assist ‘young carers’ thrive and achieve their personal, career and study goals.

If you know a young carer who can benefit from some support, you can refer them directly to the Young Carers Team, by calling 1300 227 377.
